School for the Blind students to serve Feb 7 at Sapulpa Lion’s beans & chili dinner

SAPULPA, Okla. – The Sapulpa Lion’s Club members have prepared their family style beans and chili recipes that have kept friends and neighbors coming back to their annual dinners every year since 1952.

For only $8, bean and chili supper guests get all they can eat of everything on the menu: chili and four kinds of beans -- the number one seller pinto -- plus navy, lima (or butter) beans, and black eyed peas, and, of course, cornbread, cole slaw, tea, coffee, milk and buttermilk.

Thirty-two Oklahoma School for the Blind students will help serve this year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 7 at Sapulpa First Baptist Church located at 124 S. Elm.

OSB is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Students include sixth, seventh and eighth graders, high school students from the service learning class and members of OSB’s Family, Career and Community Leaders (FCCLA).

The Lions’ members will cover the dinner hours from 5 to 7 p.m.

Research by Faye Miller, Oklahoma School for the Blind bean supper coordinator and orientation and mobility specialist, shows that Oklahoma School for the Blind students started volunteering for the fundraiser in 2011.

OSB administrators and Lions Club leaders agree that the event is a great experience for the students.

“The Sapulpa Lions Club has been a wonderful supporter of Oklahoma School for the Blind for many years,” Rita Echelle, OSB superintendent, said. “Their donations are a wonderful blessing for our school, plus this bean supper is a great opportunity for service learning and social interaction for our students.

“Our dinner is all you can eat family style,” Stella Neal, one of the Sapulpa Lions Club directors, said. “You can come and get your stomachs full, plus enjoy the entertainment from the School for the Blind musicians.”

“Sure makes it easy to sell tickets,” Lions Club’s Treasurer Wayne Neal added with a smile.

The Lions generously donated tickets to police, fire and the sheriff’s officers to show support for their contributions to the community.

Two musicians from OSB’s award-winning Jazz Band will entertain during the lunch. Senior Richelle Zampella will play saxophone, while OSB graduate Gunner Harris will entertain on the trombone.

The Jazz Band has won the Oklahoma state championship against other public schools in Class 2A for three consecutive years.

OSB’s FCCLA will have cookbooks for sale with favorite recipes from OSB’s faculty, students, families and friends.
