SULPHUR, Okla. – Oklahoma School for the Deaf Superintendent Larry Hawkins was honored March 14 by family, friends, students and co-workers with a surprise building dedication.

Following a program in the OSD gymnasium led by his daughter Jill Hawkins, Larry Hawkins and his family cut a ribbon symbolizing the naming of the Larry Hawkins Activity Center in his honor.

Jill Hawkins is an OSD outreach specialist and teacher who serves students attending local schools across the state.

Noel Tyler, Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services executive director, said, ““Superintendent Larry Hawkins is a quiet, reserved and dedicated visionary, strategic thinker, and problem solver.

“He knows the critical importance for the school of establishing and maintaining good relationship with parents, community and state partners,” she said. “He recognizes and acknowledges the of strengths others, and he believes in always finding opportunities to build upon their strengths.”

“I am so honored to be included with other OSD superintendents and one outstanding student who have had buildings dedicated to them,” Hawkins told assembled family and friends. “It is my goal to live up to the educational standards set by these past outstanding leaders by ensuring that OSD students are well-prepared to reach their goals in the future.”

Hawkins initially retired in August 2011 as superintendent at both OSD in Sulphur and Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee.

He returned from retirement in 2016 to serve as interim OSB superintendent and agreed in June to lead OSD on an interim basis at the same time.

Hawkins officially started his second term as OSD superintendent on August 8, 2016.

Both schools are divisions of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Hawkins has now served for 13 years as OSD superintendent, nearly two years as OSB superintendent, one year as an OSD administrator and six years as a classroom teacher.
