Self-direction promotes personal choice and control over the delivery of waiver and state plan services, including who provides the services and how services are provided. For example, participants are afforded the decision-making authority to recruit, hire, train and supervise the individuals who furnish their services.  In short, self-direction allows you to design the supports that are best for you. You create a plan based on your challenges and strengths. With self-direction, you determine the supports that help you reach your unique independent living goals.

Self-directed services is an option for members receiving HCBS through the In-Home Supports Waiver for Adults (IHSW-A), In-Home Supports Waiver for Children (IHSW-C), and the Community Waiver when the member lives in a non-residential setting.
