Medication, Medical Supplies, and Medical Equipment

The cost of prescription or over-the-counter drugs, supplies, or equipment may be a countable medical expense. When a client rents medical equipment or supplies, the cost may include rental costs.

Approvable Medication, Supplies, and Equipment

The household must show that a licensed or qualified health professional approved the item as part of a prescribed treatment plan.

Controlled Substance Exclusion

Any substance listed as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substance Act does not qualify. This excludes prescribed medical marijuana or any associated expenses.

Approvable Amount

Approve the actual amount paid by the household for these expenses. Do not include the amount paid by an insurance company.

Examples:

Examples include but are not limited to

  • Aspirin for arthritics,
  • bandages and gauze for surgical patients,
  • syringes or needles for injecting prescription medicine,
  • crutches,
  • wheelchairs,
  • hospital beds,
  • colostomy bags, or
  • portable oxygen tanks.
