Purpose of LIHEAP
The Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low income households with energy costs.
Households may apply for and receive help with their primary source of energy during three scheduled application periods each year. Households experiencing a life-threatening energy crisis may request assistance at any time during the year.
The household receives a onetime payment for each approved application. The amount approved is generally greater at the lowest income levels; DHS seeks to alleviate the burdens of those most affected by high energy costs.
