Compassion is defined as the "sympathetic care and concern for the suffering or misfortune of others." It is hard for us to track our level of compassion the same way we do with our number of case actions completed. As Social Services Specialists, many of you came to this job with an innate level of compassion that rivals any other sector. In order to offer quality service to our clients, it is important for you to remain cognizant of your level of compassion.
There are many barriers to practicing compassion such as our own fears, anxieties, and biases. Be self-aware and practice empathy so that you can seek understanding of all people you interact with in your professional life.
