Allotment reduction is an involuntary method of collecting SNAP overpayment claims by reducing the monthly benefit amount a household receives. AFS BIR staff doesn't reduce benefits for the initial month of certification or use other involuntary collection methods against household members while the benefit allotment is reduced. AFS BIR staff enters the recoupment code into the computer system and informs the client of the new benefit amount.
|Allotment Reduction amounts by type|
|Agency error or inadvertenthousehold error||10% or $10, whichever is greater|
|Intentional program violation||20% or $20, whichever is greater|
|Note – The client may always request a higher reduction to its monthly allotment.|
The Notice of Overpayment advises the household not to send cash through the mail. Staff may accept cash from a client in person when they are unable to make payments by personal check, money order, or cashier's check. You will give the client a receipt. Do not send cash through the mail to Financial Services after receiving it from the client.
