Inadvertent Household Error

An inadvertent household error is caused by a misunderstanding or unintended error on the part of the household. You may need to establish an overpayment claim if a household inadvertently:

  • Failed to provide DHS with correct or complete information
  • Failed to report a change in household circumstances
  • Received benefits (or more benefits than it was entitled to receive) pending a fair hearing decision*

These errors must be accidental.  If the errors were caused on purpose, they would be considered intentional program violations.  The items listed above are only examples and should not limit the definition of inadvertent household error.

*Note – More on Fair Hearing procedures coming soon.
