Gov. Brad Henry today raised the Oklahoma Homeland Security Threat Level from Elevated Condition ("Yellow") to High Condition ("Orange") for certain sectors. This decision comes in the wake of the terrorist attacks in London this morning and in consultation with U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Oklahoma Homeland Security Director Kerry Pettingill.
"Homeland security authorities in the United States are urging increased vigilance around mass transit operations," said Gov. Henry. "While there is no evidence of a specific threat in Oklahoma or any other state, we are asking citizens to be especially vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement officials."
The change in alert status does not affect commercial rail or general aviation.
There is no specific intelligence targeting U.S. transit systems, however homeland security officials determined the threat level should be elevated to "Orange" specifically for mass transit systems across the country to include regional and intercity rail and bus systems.
"Although Oklahoma has limited mass transit systems, we decided to follow the lead of federal officials and raise the level to "Orange" across Oklahoma, as well. I have been in contact with the police chiefs from Oklahoma City and Tulsa," said Pettingill. Both are aware of the increased threat level and are reviewing security plans already in place. Additionally, an information bulletin was sent over the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System to law enforcement agencies across the state."

"As Oklahomans and Americans, we know the specter of terrorism all too well and the pain and suffering it is designed to inflict. We also know that in the face of such senseless, murderous acts human kindness and decency will ultimately prevail. We stand with the people of Great Britain and the rest of the free world united in the war against terrorism."
