The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing roadway improvements on SH-51 from SH-16 junction east 5.25 miles. This segment of SH-51 is a two-lane open section with 12-foot-wide driving lanes and 2 to 4-foot-wide shoulders. The purpose and need of this project is to correct a narrow roadway, enhance safety, and provide operational improvements. In an effort to increase safety, ODOT proposes to improve this segment of SH-51 by widening the shoulder, realigning Long Bay Road and extending, replacing, or adding drainage structures. Most of the project length will be widened symmetrically on both sides of the existing alignment to create two 12-foot-wide paved driving lanes with 6-foot-wide paved shoulders. In the causeway area of Fort Gibson Lake 10-foot-wide shoulders will be added. Beginning at N 433 Rd. (Morgan's Corner), the roadway will be improved to a three lane section consisting of two 12-foot-wide driving lanes and a 14-foot-wide center turn lane. The Long Bay Road intersection will be realigned to remove the skewed intersection. At the Missouri Pacific Railroad, Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, and the Indian Lodge Motor-Court a curb with storm sewers will be utilized to minimize impacts to these areas. The highway will remain open during construction and access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
