PR# 15-003

Progress on one of Oklahoma City’s most congested and fasting growing highway corridors is set to take a major step as the next project to reconstruct and widen SH-74 in north Oklahoma City is scheduled to begin the first week of February.  The approximately $34 million project will include reconstruction and widening SH-74 from north of Memorial Rd. to just north of N.W. 164th St.

In order to inform the public about the project and what local residents can expect during construction which will start earlier that week, a public information meeting is scheduled to take place February 5.

The meeting will be:

  • 5:30 p.m. -7 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 5
  • Crossings Community Church,  Room 250
  • 14600 N. Portland Ave., Oklahoma City, OK
  • Attendees are asked to use the west main entrance to the church

The meeting will consist of a presentation on scheduled improvements, traffic control plans as well as the extent and impact of the project. Representatives from ODOT and the contractor will be available to describe the anticipated construction process and schedules and answer any questions the public may have.

The project, which widens SH-74 from two to four lanes divided, will reconstruct the SH-74/N.W. 164th St. intersection and construct a SH-74 bridge over N.W. 150th St. as well as ramps to and from north and southbound SH-74 and N.W. 150th St. The project also adds service roads on both sides of the highway to allow for access to local businesses and to accommodate future growth in the area while keeping SH-74 safe.

Construction on the project is estimated to start Feb. 2 and take a little over a year to complete. During the construction, north and southbound SH-74 will remain open, but short-term closures of N.W. 150th St. and N.W. 164th St. can be expected at times. Daily traffic advisories will be sent out to inform drivers of traffic changes or short-term lane closures as the project progresses. In an effort to expedite the project, there are incentives totaling up to over $1 million built in to the contract for early completion.

The upcoming project is the third of four in the corridor, with an additional project scheduled for 2017 to reconstruct and widen SH-74 from just north of 164th St., north 2.5 miles to N.W. 206th (Covell Rd.). These projects will complete the widening of SH-74 from Memorial Rd. to Waterloo Rd. in order to meet the traffic needs of this growing area. Including completed and upcoming projects, an estimated $125 million will have been invested in projects to widen and improve the SH-74 corridor in this area.
