New I-40 Interchange Opens in El Reno
The I-40 and Radio Rd. interchange in El Reno opened to traffic Nov. 3, 2016. A new five-lane bridge was built over I-40 and includes traffic signals for the eastbound and westbound on- and off-ramps to I-40.
Radio Rd. Project Details
- ODOT opened Nov. 3, 2016, a new I-40 overpass bridge and a diamond-shaped interchange with on- and off-ramps at Radio Rd. in Canadian County to help facilitate traffic into El Reno.
- Construction started Nov. 2, 2015.
- Unique public-private partnerships brought this project into creation. Partners include the City of El Reno, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, now Seventy Seven Energy Corp., and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
- The purpose of the project is to improve safety and interstate access, which also will help accommodate economic growth in the area.
- Radio Rd. is two miles east of US-81 in Canadian County.
- In 2012, there were 34,920 vehicles a day on average traveling I-40 in this area. ODOT projects that traffic will increase to 59,270 vehicles a day on average by 2032.
- Sherwood Construction Co. Inc. of Tulsa was awarded the $17 million contract at the June 1, 2015, Oklahoma Transportation Commission meeting.
- A companion project by the City of El Reno widened Radio Road to four lanes from I-40 north to SH-66. This project also was awarded to Sherwood Construction Co.
