ODMHSAS RECEIVES $2.4 MILLION TO EXPAND PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has been awarded a 'Oklahoma Young Adults and Youth (O-YAY)' initiative grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.  The grant totals $2.4 million over three years with the state receiving $800,000 each year. 2015 Champions of Health Winners Announced

TULSA, OKLA. — The Family & Children’s Services – Women in Recovery (WIR) program has been named the recipient of the Dr. Rodney L. Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health, the highest honor of the Champions of Health awards. The Tulsa-based program focuses on improving the complex health and wellness needs of women facing long prison sentences for non-violent, drug offenses by offering a holistic and intensive alternative health and treatment center. OKLAHOMA TREATMENT COURT PROGRAMS HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS

A highly successful alternative-to-incarceration program that has put millions of dollars back into the state economy was in the spotlight recently at the state capitol.  Twenty-five graduates of the state’s drug courts and mental health courts were honored at a commencement ceremony held April 15, followed by a rally and awards presentation recognizing county programs achieving outstanding results. SITE OF 1918 FIRE VICTIMS’ GRAVES TO BE MEMORIALIZED APRIL 13
Memorial Stone to be Dedicated at 2 p.m. Ceremony in Norman

For nearly 100 years, the final resting places of 39 people who died in a 1918 ward fire at Griffin Memorial Hospital have been left largely forgotten, buried in an unmarked site at the corner of North Porter and Rock Creek Road in the IOOF Cemetery.

But 97 years to the day after that fatal blaze, representatives of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and GMH staff, along with mental health advocates, clergy and other community members will make sure they are forgotten no longer. A memorial service is planned for Monday, April 13, 2 p.m. at 1913 N. Porter Ave., the northeast corner of the IOOF Cemetery in Norman, where a stone will be placed in their memory. Read More

UNDERAGE DRINKING CAMPAIGN TO FOCUS ON PREVENTION, COMPLIANCE DURING HIGH-RISK PERIOD

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services’ Statewide Prevention Network is partnering with law enforcement agencies to protect our state’s youth at a time when underage drinking is traditionally extremely high. The “Underage Drinking: You’ve Got 2 Much 2 Lose” enforcement campaign, slated for April 9-19, will focus on youth drinking prevention through both prevention activities and compliance checks. Read More

OKLAHOMA ACADEMY RELEASES STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING OKLAHOMA’S HEALTH STATUS

Oklahoma City – Accepting federal funds offered through the Affordable Care Act, expanding alternatives to incarceration and a statewide ban of smoking in public spaces are among the priority recommendations developed at the Oklahoma Academy’s 2014 Town Hall entitled “We Can Do Better: Improving the Health of the Oklahoma People.”  Read More

The ODMHSAS has opened two funding announcements for the prevention of non-medical use of prescription drugs.  The ODMHSAS intends to fund eligible applicants to plan and implement a targeted non-medical use of prescription drug prevention initiative among persons aged 12-25 in select, high-need communities.
