Community Cafes Hosted for Child Abuse Prevention Plan

Thursday, May 31, 2018
The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) is seeking input from private and public agencies, organizations, private citizens and consumers to develop an effective statewide comprehensive child abuse prevention plan.
Recently the OSDH sought public feedback via an online survey and now they are seeking feedback via events across the state that allow for meaningful conversations around the topic of child abuse prevention at the community level.
The OSDH has collaborated with the Oklahoma Partnership for School Readiness (OPSR) to host, coordinate and lead 14 planned events in various parts of the state. In each locale, there will be a stakeholder event for professionals followed by a separate event for the public to provide feedback.
The method chosen for obtaining feedback will be the World Cafe Method, which is a simple, effective and a flexible format for hosting large group dialogue. This will take the place of public hearings and focus groups used in the past.
The cafes provide an opportunity for the public to share input on needs, gaps and hopes for participants in their area. Responses will be used to develop the upcoming five-year Oklahoma State Plan for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
The focus of the cafe is on awareness, availability, and use of community resources that target identified risk factors for child maltreatment. The information received will help determine what community-specific programs individuals are aware of and use, as well as what is still needed.
 Upcoming Community Cafes include:
June 6 – Bartlesville
June 11 – Oklahoma City
June 18 – Woodward
June 20 – Tulsa
June 26 – Elk City
June 27 – Ada
