Oklahoma Health Equity Campaign Meeting to Discuss Health Impact Assessment

The Oklahoma State Health Department (OSDH) will host the next Oklahoma Health Equity Campaign (OHEC) Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The meeting provides OHEC an opportunity to interact with state and local partners to highlight communityhealth initiatives in which they are involved.
Focus will be given to the Cityof Oklahoma City Health Impact Assessment, which will be presented by John Tankard,associate planner with the Cityof Oklahoma City Planning Department. The Health Impact Assessment is a process that was undertaken by the cityas part of a new comprehensive plan seeking to find innovative ways to increase access to physical activity and healthy foods. In doing so the city incorporates health conscious choices in all policy concepts, and an active transportation program.
Health equity, as understood in public health literature and practice, provides everyone the opportunity to “attain their full health potential” and no one is “disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of their social position or other socially determined circumstance.” Social determinants of health are life-enhancing resources, such as food supply, housing, economic and social relationships, transportation, education, and health care, whose distribution across populations effectively determines length and quality of life.
Tankard will discuss how the project came about, the partnerships it has helped to create, and the ways in which the HIA process has influenced day-to-day and long-term operations within the city’s planning department.
The meeting will be held at the Oklahoma State Department of Health, 1000 NE 10th Street, Oklahoma City, Room 806 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
