Child Guidance Program
Where Families Find Solutions
The Child Guidance Program is a public health program that has been operating in county health departments since 1956. The purpose is to promote optimal development, healthy behavior and effective interaction for families with children birth through twelve years old. Local Child Guidance staff includes a child development specialist, psychological clinician, and speech pathologist. All staff have graduate degrees in their specialties. Each professional hold either professional licensure or certification in their professional disciplines. Clinic staff work with other health department staff, professionals and community agencies and organizations to support families with young children through individual, professional or community based services.
Child Guidance Staff Discipline Specific Services:
- Behavioral Health:
Psychological evaluations for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, school problems, and behavior concerns.
Short-term treatment for children and families dealing with emotional, behavioral, and learning problems.
Consultation to parents, childcare providers, teachers, and other professionals on mental health related issues such as children and divorce, managing anger, grief and loss, raising spirited children, and stress management. - Child Development:
Developmental screenings and assessments to children birth to 8 years.
Parent education to enhance parenting skills.
Mental health & behavioral health consultations to child care providers.
Educational presentations on early childhood issues & parent education topics. - Speech/Language:
Speech/Language screenings & diagnostic evaluations.
Speech/Language therapy.
Parent education on speech/language.
Hanen Training for parents and Early Childhood professionals.
Hearing screening for children birth to 12 years.
Services provided by all Child Guidance Clinic staff:
- Community Collaboration & Professional Consultation/Training Services:
Each professional provides consultation to professionals, schools, and community agencies on their areas of expertise in addition to serving on committees, coalitions, and task forces as professional support. Educational trainings are offered through workshops, in-service trainings or special projects upon request.
