Tuberculosis (TB) is a reportable disease in Oklahoma. TB is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which usually affects the lungs. However, other parts of the body can be affected. When someone with TB disease of the lung coughs, sneezes, laughs, or sings, TB bacteria get into the air. People who share the same air space with this person may breathe in the bacteria.
TB symptoms may include feeling weak or sick, weight loss, fever and night sweats. Persons with TB of the lung may have complaints of cough, chest pain, and/or coughing up blood. Other symptoms depend on the particular part of the body that is affected.

The Health Department is responsible for the identification and treat of tuberculosis patients, assurance appropriate measures are taken to prevent the occurrence and transmission of tuberculosis, analysis of tuberculosis related data for program evaluation and planning, and ultimately, eliminate tuberculosis in Oklahoma.
- TB Skin Test (see below for criteria)
- Additional diagnostic procedures, as needed
- Treatment, per physician's orders, for persons with active TB disease (including provision of medications)
- Monitoring of clients on TB therapy
- Directly Observed Therapy (DOT)
- Follow up of previously treated persons
- Investigation and review of TB cases and suspects
- Client education
- Consultation and referral
As of the 2020 Physician Approved Protocols on TB it is the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) policy to perform tuberculin skin test (TST) on the following high-risk persons at no charge:
- Specific order to perform a TST from any physician.
- All TB cases and TB suspects at the County Health Department (CHD) initial workup, unless there is documentation of a prior reactive TST with a recorded date of application and millimeters (mm) of induration or documented prior positive IGRA.
- Persons with a chronic cough greater than 3 weeks or other symptoms of TB.
- Contacts to TB cases in accordance with contact investigation guidelines
- Clients reporting a prior "positive" TST but have no documentation as to date of application and mm of induration and fit these criteria for testing.
- High risk groups:
- Homeless persons.
- Inmates of city or county jail facilities or prison, when symptomatic or there is a question of possible active TB.
- Alcoholics and intravenous drug abusers.
- Persons entering substance abuse therapy programs.
- Persons with HIV infection or AIDS.
- Foreign born persons.
The following low-risk persons may be tested using CCHD purchased Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) for such use. As of January, 2020 there is a $15.00 fee for the following:
- Persons who will receive regular monitoring of TST status as an employee, e.g., health care workers, emergency response personnel (police, sheriff, fire and EMT personnel) and employees of prisons, jails, nursing homes, homeless shelters, substance abuse treatment centers and funeral homes.
- Nursing home residents.
- Residents or employees of DHS juvenile residential facilities.
- College or university students or for higher education school entry.
TB Services are provided 8:00 AM 12:00 PM and 1:00PM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

Patients are required to return to a clinic 48-72 hours after receiving the tuberculosis test to complete the process. Thursday is NOT a good day to get a skin test.
