General CDL

  1. What is the process to obtain a CDL license?

    • You will need proof of US Citizenship, proof of Oklahoma residency, and if you plan on driving out of state, you will need to bring in a DOT Medical Card. These certified documents will need to be brought into any DPS testing facility where an Examiner can look over them and start your application for CDL testing. If you qualify, they will set you up for the proper written tests. Upon passing of all written tests, you will be given a CDL Permit which will be good for 180 days. You must hold your CLP for a minimum of 14 days before you are eligible to take your driving skills test. Once your 14 days are up, you can come in and take your skills test. Upon passing your skills test, your CDL will be issued to you.

  2. How do I renew my CDL?

    • Bring in your proof of US Citizenship, proof of Oklahoma residency, DOT Medical Card if you have one and are required to maintain it on file, and your driver license into any DPS testing facility so an examiner can view your documents and issue you the proper paperwork to take to the tag agent so they can print the renewed license.

  3. What if I lost my CDL?

  4. Can I renew or replace my CDL by mail?

    • No. A CDL license is a federally regulated license and therefore must be issued by a Driver License Examiner. Therefore you must appear in person with the proper documents in order to renew or replace your commercial license.

  5. What do I need to do if I am downgraded?

    • If you are downgraded because you did not get a medical card into the DPS office in time, you will need to bring in your proof of US citizenship, proof of residency, and current dot medical card into any DPS office so we can look into the file and see if you are eligible. WE CANNOT ACCEPT ANY UPGRADES BY FAX, EMAIL, OR MAIL. YOU MUST COME IN TO DO THIS.

  6. Where do I obtain a CDL manual?

    • You can pick up a CDL manual from any DPS testing facility or download manual here.

  7. Where can I find information on upcoming changes for commercial driver's?

  8. If I already hold a CDL and I want to get a higher class CDL, do I still have to take the pre-trip inspection?

    • Yes, you will be required to do the full skills test: pre-trip, basic control skills, and driving.
  1. If I already hold a CDL and I want to add an endorsement, do I still have to take the pre-trip inspection?

      • Passenger (P)
      • School Bus (S)
