The Director is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the agency, including field locations and administrative functions such as personnel, training, budgeting, and overall operation of the agency. The Director is the primary contact for the Governor's office, legislators, local law enforcement agencies, other state agencies, and department of correction agencies located throughout the United States. This position provides the leadership and vision for the agency, drawing upon experience and knowledge as an administrator and the knowledge and experience of executive staff.
In October 2022, Governor Kevin Stitt announced the appointment of Steven Harpe as the Director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. In 2019, Harpe served as the Chairman of the Oklahoma Board of Corrections. After his tenure with the board, Harpe went on to serve the state in multiple capacities, simultaneously holding the positions of Chief Operating Officer for the state, Executive Director of the Office of Management and Enterprise Services, and Deputy Secretary of Digital Transformation and Administration.
