The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) has ample vaccine supply for children and adults

OKLAHOMA CITY — COVID-19 vaccine appointments are now available on the OSDH vaccine scheduler portal for Oklahomans ages 5+, following recent authorization by the FDA and recommendation by the CDC.

“We are excited to take this next step in protecting our youngest Oklahomans and are confident it will continue to strengthen our pandemic response efforts,” said Interim Commissioner of Health Keith Reed. “Along with an ample supply of vaccines for those 12 years and older, we anticipate over 130,000 new doses of the Pfizer vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds to be in the state by Friday, Nov. 12.”

The new doses of the Pfizer vaccine are specifically intended for 5- to 11-year-olds, and contain a dosage roughly ⅓ the amount used for older children and adults. In clinical trials, this vaccine performed well in keeping young children safe from COVID-19.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their child’s pediatrician for more information about receiving a COVID-19 vaccination.

“I encourage all parents to have their young children vaccinated, now that it is available for ages 5 to 11,” said Dr. Donna Tyungu, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health. “It really is an opportunity for peace of mind, especially as many families gather together for the holidays. As a parent myself, I understand that it’s important to be fully informed when making decisions for your child. If parents are unsure, I encourage them to discuss it more with their child’s doctor. Pediatricians are a great resource to answer questions about the vaccine and make recommendations based on your child’s health history.”

“The COVID-19 vaccine is a safe option for both children and adults,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gitanjali Pai. “We understand that as a parent, your child’s wellbeing is your top priority. I want to assure you that the vaccine is a safe and effective option to protect against COVID-19 and recommend that you talk to your child’s pediatrician about getting them vaccinated.”

COVID-19 vaccines are readily available at a variety of providers. Eligible Oklahomans can find vaccine appointments in their area by visiting a local pharmacy or personal provider, using the state’s Vaccine Scheduler Portal, visiting https://www.vaccines.gov/ or by calling 211.
