Jeff Bagby: The Golden Age of Oklahoma Banking

This painting was gifted to the Banking Department by the artist, Jeff Bagby, at his retirement party April 10th, 2026. Here are his accompanying notes:

The shape of the state of Oklahoma is made from barn wood, and the state flag is painted on it.

The official Banking Department flag is draped over the state.

The background is Indian Territory prior to statehood with a selection of tribal territories highlighted.  The rivers are depicted by chaining the names of all the Department employees Jeff worked with from his hiring in 1985 through his retirement on April 10th, 2026. View the location legend of employee names below.

The state bird, Scissortail Flycatcher is perched on the panhandle of the state.

The gold and silver coins represent a number of the commissioners who served in that position over the years.  The coin on top is the longest serving and current (as of the time of this painting) commissioner Mick Thompson.

In the upper right corner is a compass.  It represents the mission of the Banking Department to show bankers across the state where true north is and set a path for success.

The frame surrounding the painting is walnut wood milled from lumber salvaged from the backyard of Commissioner Mick Thompson’s house in Edmond.
