Hope Heroes: A Collaboration of Hope Sparks Joy

Oklahomans are known for our resilience amidst challenges and our willingness to support our neighbors in times of need. This spirit extends to the employees and providers of Oklahoma Human Services, where inspiring partnerships are born.

One such example is the collaboration turned friendship between Oklahoma Human Services employee Madison Johnson and newly certified provider Stacy Haigood.

Johnson, a Foster Care and Agency Companion Specialist with the Developmental Disabilities Services Division, joined forces with Haigood, a provider from a family deeply rooted in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Together, this budding partnership embodies the true spirit of HOPE, showcasing the transformative power of teamwork, perseverance, and positive attitudes.

Initially aiming to become certified as a companion provider to support adults who need a shared living arrangement to safely live in the community, Haigood's perspective shifted upon recognizing the urgent need for specialized foster homes for teens with developmental disabilities in the state’s care. Demonstrating remarkable flexibility, she pivoted her efforts to address this critical need.

Their journey was marked by challenges, but Johnson's unwavering dedication and Haigood's resilient spirit propelled them forward. Johnson went above and beyond, working tirelessly to assist Haigood in navigating the complexities of becoming dually certified as both a specialized foster home and agency companion. Despite inevitable obstacles along the way, their partnership thrived on a foundation of collaboration, patience, and mutual support.

"It was amazing that Stacy just stepped up and pivoted to be able to serve where the need was, and even though there were some bumps in the road, I’m so grateful that we had the flexibility to accomplish this unique placement," reflects Johnson.

Haigood's openness to embracing change and her genuine desire to bring joy to someone’s life underscored her remarkable journey.

"I was pretty open in regard to age when it came to placement. I just wanted to be able to bring joy to someone’s life,” said Haigood, “At the end of every day, my foster son looks at me and says, 'I had fun today,' and for me, that makes it all worth it.”

Throughout the process, Johnson served not only as a professional mentor but also as a steadfast source of friendship and support for Haigood.

"Anytime I felt frustrated or concerned at all during this process, I would call Madison and she would listen, or talk me through my concerns, and just be there anytime to support me,” said Haigood. “Yes, we work together, but she’s really become a friend to me, and I’m so grateful for that.”

Their collective efforts culminated in the placement of a teen with developmental disabilities in Haigood’s loving care, sparking joy and hope not only in his life but also within the community. Their story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact that collaboration and compassion can have on transforming lives.

As we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Johnson, Haigood, and the dedicated staff of Oklahoma Human Services, let us be inspired to join their ranks in supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Together, through our collective efforts, we can continue to nurture hope and build a brighter future for all.
